Tue 2 – Thu 25 May 2023
Tues, Weds, Thurs & Sat, booking essential (open to public Thurs & Sat)
East Street Arts, Project Space, Patrick Studios, St Mary’s Lane, Leeds, LS9 7EH
After showing across the UK and internationally, [re]locate opens in May at East Street Arts, accompanied by a learning programme for young people.
This challenging and timely exhibition has been created by London-based artist and educator Tahera Aziz. Taking the notion of the daily routine of waiting at the bus stop as its starting point, the artwork exploits the power of audio storytelling to foreground Stephen Lawrence’s murder once again. [re]locate offers unique insights into the case by placing the audience in the position of ‘witness’. The artwork aims to raise social awareness and encourage audiences to reflect upon the issues of racism and stereotyping in contemporary life, and social responsibility.
[re]ocate: soundings programme is supported by the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality in the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University and the School of Arts and Creative Industries at London South Bank University.
Trigger warning: [re]locate invites conversation around difficult topics, and the content of the story may cause upset or distress. It will contain sensitive content including violence, assault, murder, death, plus strong and offensive language including racial abuse. It may trigger memories of past experiences of racism.
Access: The installation has low light levels. Seating can be provided, if required. The installation runs for approx. 18 minutes.
