Xavier de Sousa

Brighton and Lisbon

Xavier de Sousa is an independent performance maker and culture worker, based between Brighton and Lisbon. He explores personal and political heritage in the context of belonging, nationalism and migration through live performances, written text and queer performance and research methodologies.

His evolving trilogy of works that contextualises the lived experiences of migrant communities includes touring theatre show POST and in-development show REGNANT that is set to premiere in 2021. Alongside this work, Xavier curates the digital series queeringborders, live programme performingbordersLIVE and New Queers on the Block, The Marlborough Theatre’s Touring and Artist Development Programme. He is also co-Director of the digital live art platform performingborders and co-founder of Migrants in Culture.

REGNANT appears as part of East Street Arts’ Season for Change programme. Encompassing durational performance, short film, workshops and open studio events it will connect with East Leeds neighbourhoods and the audience to connect with themes of migration, identity, belonging, adaptation and power structures and how these collide with the issue of climate change. This work will be presented in April 2021.
