How could you draw time and change in Leeds? New and emerging artists and illustrators are invited to submit work to a major heritage and regeneration project.
The Drawing Time brief offers artists a £500 fee and travel expenses and is part of East Street Arts’ Hidden Histories of New Briggate project. This heritage-led regeneration project is about revitalising the high street by researching and celebrating the stories of this special part of the city.
So, what’s the creative challenge? Artists can use illustration, drawing or other creative visual ideas to illustrate the Hidden Histories of New Briggate. It’s a chance to think deeply about what time travel could mean in this context – including ideas about the change in a place in a unique piece of art that considers time, the transformation of the city and what brings people together.
The drawing or artwork can be created digitally or in a more traditional, analogue way. The piece should work both on a small scale, like a postcard, and larger such as a big image being projected onto a wall.
How will the art be used? The collection of artworks will be used as part of East Street Arts’ series of Take Away artworks. They will also be included in an exhibition which will be part of the organisation’s final celebratory events on New Briggate at the end of 2023.
New Briggate is a High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) and is one of a national programme of around 60 heritage-led regeneration projects focused on revitalising the high street. This opportunity is open to students, and emerging and established artists based in Leeds or Yorkshire: Fee: £500 (and travel expenses for up to two visits to new Briggate).
Initially, East Street Arts will select six artists to create artworks this winter, to apply please submit:
- Summarise your idea: tell us about the theme you want to explore and how you will integrate a time travel aspect to the picture (max 500 words). We do not require preparatory drawings or a detailed description of the final artwork, instead, it should be an initial idea that we expect you to develop as you explore the theme and create the drawing.
- Share up to 3 examples of your previous work and include any relevant weblinks and your CV.
- Please submit your written answers in one PDF document and title the document with your name and ‘Drawing Time’. Please also include your name, email address and a link to your website, artist Instagram or examples of your work in a PDF document. You do not have to have a professional website, but please show us something you have created or worked on.
- Send your proposal to: alice.boulton-breeze@esamail.org.uk by 6/12/22.
Selected artists will be informed by 9 Dec. The artwork will need to be completed and submitted by 25th January 2023.
If your proposal is accepted, you will be invited to join us on New Briggate on December 12th for lunch and an afternoon of talks and discussion with the other artists and project workers. If the weather is suitable, you can also explore, draw and photograph the street to collect materials for your drawing project.
